For a dorm room, the useful comparison is not simply “string lights versus fairy lights.” Those names do not establish how a particular set is powered, how bright it is, or whether your residence allows it. Compare exact products and the space you want to decorate.
Start with your current housing rules and ask staff about unclear restrictions before buying. Neither option below is claimed to be approved for your dorm. We checked manufacturer specifications, not hands-on brightness, battery runtime or installation performance. Amazon buttons open labeled searches because exact listings for these versions have not been verified.
IKEA LEDFYR: a simple battery-powered accent

Consider it for: a small decorative accent where you prefer a battery-powered setup. Think twice if: you want an extended wall display, color-changing effects or a verified runtime between battery changes. We have not established those capabilities for this model.
Match the product number and read its battery and placement instructions. Do not assume a similar-looking light set has the same power requirements. Check the manufacturer's current total price as well as any marketplace offer; our search link does not establish the cheapest seller.

Consider it for: a longer decorative display where app-controlled effects are part of what you want. Think twice if: you want a simple setup with no app, have not checked a suitable power supply, or cannot confirm the device will work with your campus network arrangements.

Measure the display, not just the room
Sketch the intended route on paper and mark the power location separately. A total cable length may include a section with no lights, so compare the illuminated length when planning the visible display. Keep the plan within both housing rules and the product's installation instructions.
