An earthquake alert is not a substitute for a working smoke alarm. They address different hazards. Do not skip smoke alarms because you consider your home low-risk, have an earthquake-alert app, or own another kind of warning device.

This page explains the distinction using official U.S. guidance. It is not an emergency-response plan, a local building-code assessment or a hands-on product review. We have removed the previous generic product recommendations because their capabilities were not verified.

Smoke alarms: protection against a different hazard

The U.S. Fire Administration's smoke-alarm guidance calls for alarms in bedrooms, outside sleeping areas and on every home level, including the basement. It recommends interconnected alarms and monthly testing. Follow the specific manufacturer's maintenance and replacement instructions, and check local requirements with your fire marshal.

If your alarms are hardwired, USFA says installation should be performed by a qualified electrician. If cost or installation is a barrier, ask your local fire department on its nonemergency number about available assistance. If you rent or live in student housing, contact the responsible building staff about the installed system; do not disconnect or replace building equipment yourself.

Earthquake early warning is not prediction

The USGS ShakeAlert overview explains that the system detects an earthquake that has already started. A sensor network estimates the event, and technical partners deliver alerts or trigger protective actions. It is not a promise to predict the date or location of a future earthquake.

Warning time is not guaranteed. USGS explains that people close to an earthquake's origin may receive little or no advance warning. Read the official explanation of alert timing and limitations. Do not infer that every device sold as an “earthquake alarm” connects to that network or provides the same service.

Questions to resolve before buying a device

Use these questions to separate a specific, documented capability from a broad product label:

  • What hazard does it detect? Ask for the exact model and manual. A product name alone is not enough to establish smoke, carbon-monoxide or earthquake functionality.
  • Where does the warning come from? For an earthquake product, establish whether it uses local sensing, an external alert service, or another mechanism. Do not treat those as equivalent.
  • Where does it work? Check the provider's current geographical coverage and delivery requirements. An app listing or retailer description does not establish coverage at your address.
  • What can interrupt it? Read the documented power, network, battery and subscription requirements. Ask the provider about any unclear limitation before relying on the device.
  • Does it suit your building? Confirm smoke-alarm requirements and compatibility with the responsible installer or local fire authority before purchasing a replacement.

A practical next step

Make two separate notes: one for your existing smoke-alarm models and maintenance information, and another for the earthquake-alert guidance available where you live. Address missing information in each list independently. A shopping comparison should not turn two different safety needs into an either-or purchase.
