The useful question is not which box has the most impressive Morse-code label. It is what your child wants to do: build a circuit, program a message, or play with dots and dashes. Those are different activities, and they do not all require a dedicated kit.

Choose it for: circuit building with Morse as one activity. Check before buying: Elenco lists several box and manual editions. Match the retailer's set to the official SC100 manual selector, then confirm that the listed components support the project. Do not assume an online extension is in the printed booklet.
Skip it if: you want a ready-made device that automatically decodes typed messages. The documented activity is a manually operated circuit, not a promise of automatic translation.
Thames & Kosmos Electricity & Magnetism: a broader set
Thames and Kosmos Electricity and Magnetism 620417 includes a Morse telegraph-key activity among its electricity and magnetism experiments. The manufacturer lists an age recommendation of eight and up and two AA batteries as required. Source: Thames & Kosmos product information.
Choose it for: a child who also wants to explore circuits and magnetism. Skip it if: the only intended use is a short Morse game; a broad science set could be more equipment than you need. Read the instructions and age guidance with the supervising adult before use.

Already have a micro:bit? Use the official coding lesson
The Microsoft MakeCode Morse activity maps button presses to numbers representing dots, dashes and a space or stop. The radio lesson overview specifies two micro:bits for testing communication between boards.
This is the route to consider when writing and changing a program is the attraction. Read the lesson and check the hardware you already own before purchasing more boards. A single-board starter pack does not supply both ends of that two-board activity. We have not selected an Amazon starter pack here because its included accessories and board version need to be checked separately.
Try a five-minute paper activity first
You need two people, two pieces of paper and a pencil. Start with four letters from the Morse chart in Elenco's linked manual: E = dot, T = dash, A = dot-dash, N = dash-dot. Write a slash between letters so the boundaries are clear.
- One person writes two letters, using only E, T, A and N, and encodes them on a separate line.
- The other person decodes the symbols using the four-letter key.
- Swap roles and explain one mistake together. Try a longer message only if both want to continue.
Practice message: dot-dash / dash-dot. Reveal the answer.
The letters are A and N: AN. The slash separates the letters; it is not part of either letter's code.
This is a pattern-reading introduction, not a test of timed Morse listening skills. If the child enjoys it, ask whether building a switch or programming buttons sounds more interesting. Their answer gives you a practical reason to choose a kit.
A buying checklist for parents and gift-givers
- Find the actual activity in the manual. A product description mentioning 'coding' does not necessarily include Morse code.
- Check setup requirements. Look for required batteries, a computer, additional boards, tools and supervision.
- Match the exact edition. Compare model number and box contents, not just the product photograph.
- Choose for repeat use. If only one experiment appeals, try a free activity first. If several do, the wider kit may make more sense.

Is a dedicated Morse kit necessary?
No. Paper practice can show whether the basic idea is interesting. A physical kit adds a building activity; a programming board adds a coding project. Buy for that additional experience.

Does learning Morse mean learning computer programming?
